Stewart Elementary School was established in 1961 as a co-educational school serving
students in Toledo Public Schools. The school was named after Dr. Ella Nora Phillips Stewart,
one of the first African American female pharmacists in the United States, celebrated for her
leadership, advocacy, and lifelong dedication to education and community service.
Originally a co-educational elementary school, we made history in 2003 by becoming the first
all-girls public school in Ohio. Today, we remain different by design— providing a learning
environment that empowers girls in PreK–6 to lead with confidence. Our motto, “Where Girls of
Integrity Become Ladies of Prestige,” reflects our belief that every girl has the power to shape
her own future with confidence and grace.
At Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls, students attend through an intra district permit and must
be accepted to attend. We emphasize strong attendance, positive behavior, and academic
achievement as the foundation for success. Dressed in their school uniforms, our girls take
pride in representing a legacy of sisterhood, scholarship, and leadership that extends beyond
the classroom.
